This is a page waiting for the day.
Young adult books brew inside me. I like sassy characters and innovative stories about girls. All are cracked or broken clay pots, trying to figure out how to get a life going. Some of my girls are working class – blue collar girls -- with limited resources and big dreams (at least to them). Others live privileged lives but are cast into impossible circumstances that wake them up to the world around them.
My desire and hope is to someday see my books tucked in backpacks, read on phones, Kindles, iPads, and whatever other places that turn up as a medium for the printed word. Most of all I hunger that my books will be with my readers as they face challenges. I can't tell you how many books whispered to me I was teen and still whisper to me to this day.
I received the Martha Weston Grant from SCBWI in 2011. This grant was given to me specifically to help me add YA novels to my growing body of work. It's such an honor to have so much support of my YA vision.
I also received a SCBWI Working in Progress Grant honorable mention in 2008 for my YA romantic comedy novel PLUMB CRAZY. Again, it is so encouraging to have others see that spark
The book cover to the right is a mock-up of my sci-fi novel FRACTALS. I received a scholarship from the Highlights Foundation to attend their annual Writer's Workshop in Chautauqua a number of years ago. The first chapter of FRACTALS was my writing sample.
